November.14.2008 Yayoi Kusama, Tadao Ando & Art on Naoshima Island

Shown above is an artwork by Yayoi Kusama on Naoshima Island. For art lovers this island is a must. Located in Southern Japan, it became an art destination through the desires of a weathly industrialist who needed an museum for his extensive art collection. So you do what anyone else would do and call up the famous architect, Tadao Ando to build a museum for you.



You can stay in the hotel, which has been built into the musuem or you can stay in Mongolian inspired 'yurts'. You can imagine which one is more expensive. In the end, you can see art all over the island and it is really quite relaxing and worth the journey.

Liminal aims to communicate the sense we all often feel of being on the indistinct edge of greater understanding through an allegorically layered visual vocabulary Rose developed while he hiked distant deserts and dense rainforests and surfed lonely coasts and crowded breaks. Rose's subject matter of oceans, shores, clouds, and rain are relative to his water-based materials including gouache, acrylic, and water-color inasmuch as the content is manifested by itself to talk about itself: the subject of water is rendered in water-based media and manipulated to look beautifully fluid, wet, submerged, and misty.

I'm on the rojo magazine mailing list and this came today and I thought it very pleasant.

This is another example from the project that I'm working on - Fragments of a Student's Day: Remnants Found at School.  I'm collecting refuse that I feel allows me, as a teacher and general observer, to gain entry into the minds of teenagers and in the process learn about what it's like to pass through adolescence and school - something we all go through.

Mexico City recently held its art fair in the building site of a luxury apartment complex. Apparently, millions of dollars of art was bought. Galleries from Europe and the U.S. were well represented and seemed to be enjoying Mexico. Here is a montage of some of sights.

Gabriel Orozco

Gabriel Orozco is fascinating Mexican Artist whose retrospective at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City just closed.  The photos shown here are taken from that exhibition (without flash).  As Orozco's star shines ever brighter on the international art scene, he will probably be in a city near you in the not too distant future.
